Cardiff Quins 7 Mynyddygarreg 54

Mynydd's pre-season opener saw them travel to the Capital to take on an experienced Cardiff Quins outfit. In near perfect conditions, the visitors set the tone immediately for an afternoon of exciting rugby, running in 8 tries in an impressive victory.

It took just 90 seconds to break the deadlock, scrum half Dafydd Phillips ghosting past three defenders before sending half-back partner Tom Williams scything through a huge gap to score under the posts. Scrum half Phillips, converted.

The home side responded with a 5 minute sorty into Mynydd territory, but quick turnover ball allowed Mynydd to penetrate deep into the Quins 22. Quick ruck ball allowed fly-half Williams to give the scoring pass to centre and captain Owain Phillips who crashed over for a try midway out. Dafydd Phillips converted.

Mynydd's third try was a well worked move from first phase ball - a scrum at halfway. No8 Rhys Thomas picked from the base and fed scrum half Dafydd Phillips, who then rounded his man before sprinting 30 yards, before drawing the full back to allow Mynydd full back Scott Thomas to scorch in from the 22. Phillips converted.

It was only a matter of minutes before the full back scored his second. A loose kick by the Quins was gathered by Thomas in the Mynydd half, and he beat 3 defenders on a scintillating run to score a super try under the posts. Dafydd Phillips converted to give Mynydd a comfortable 28-0 lead at the interval.

The second half began just like the first, with the visitors on the attack. Another fine run from full back Thomas deep in Mynydd territory saw him put fly-half Tom Williams away down the touchline. The fly-half showed great awareness to chip ahead as being tackled, which saw scrum-half Dafydd Phillips win the chase for the touchdown. Phillips converted.

Mynydd's sixth try was gift-wrapped. Quins becoming frustrated at not being able to break the visitors defence started throwing the ball about in desperation. Mynydd left wing Jamie Evans was alert to a loose pass on halfway and he intercepted to race in for a try midway out. Phillips converted.

Cardiff Quins refused to throw the towel in, and good work by the tight forwards saw them cross for a well deserved try.

Full back Scott Thomas rounded off a fantastic performance by running in his third and fourth tries of the afternoon after lovely build-up play by captain Owain Phillips and impressive debutant flanker Rhodri Morgan.

An encouraging start to the season for Mynydd, with plenty to work on.
